Description: The Alaska State troopers (multiple vehicles), travel around Seward (I saw them in the radius of 25 miles) and catch unsuspecting visitors. I found only visitors being stopped and harassed (you can tell by the rental cars & agency signs). The road is very scenic with lots of overlook places. Also the road changes from 2 lane to one lane (in one direction), I was caught while merging as I increased the speed to pass one vehicle and let it merge. The trooper was coming from the opposite direction (travelling in a Chevy SUV) and I'm not sure how he was able to judge my speed! Anyway he said he clocked me at 73 on a 55 mile limit, I think I was only doing a 63 (was on cruise for 57 all along). I think its a big trap to get money for the local community - unfortunately most of the business in the town depends on visitors!

I live in Seward Alaska and am a high school teacher here. I came from the lower 48 two years ago and have had to adapt my driving. Speed laws in Alaska are taken seriously. an accident here is always serious and often fatal. back in Louisiana the speed limits were viewed as suggestions and you knew you could go over the limits with no consequences, not so in Alaska. You know what, I like it here much better where the law is taken seriously. Stay safer and keep others safer, stay below the limit. Bears, moose and gawking tourists may suddenly stop in the road in front of you with no warning!

As a Retired Alaska State Trooper I must strongly disagree with this guy. Troopers do not generate revenue for local towns with their tickets, they all go to the State. He doesn't know how a Trooper coming at him can check his speed, it's called Radar, and they do not pick out tourists in rental vehicles, there is no way to distinguish between a POV and a rental here in Alaska by sight alone. Apparently this is someone that got caught and is unhappy about it. I have driven this stretch of road many times and many drivers apparently believe they are on a race track in a very isolated place.

I encountered one of those speed traps when coming back from Anchorage about a year ago, and I was coming down Mile 12 hill doing 58 when a trooper swung a uturn coming up the hill and pulled me over. He said that I was doing 65 in a 55, and I know that I wasn't. So he than looked at my Insurance, and said that it must have been the big tires. So he let me go. He did not give me a ticket, and I would have contested it if he would have. And yes I too think that it is a big trap to get revenues for the community.

I live here in Seward the speed trap is located from 31/2 mile to 0 mile which is through town. City police and State troopers have control of that road. Again if you are watching and driving the speed limit then they would not stop you regardless of where you are from.

Troopers don't collect for local communities. Troopers cruise in marked SUV's and are fully loaded with latest technology radar/laser. This location is at a hill crest and it is easy to zip up over the limit there but they don't normally hang out in this location. "Visitors" are not targeted - unless they are speeding.

Same thing happened to me in June. I guess they are trying to make their money while the tourist season lasts. I always thought AK was a rich state and they don't need to make money by harassing visitors like PA. We were on a cruise but rented a car from Anchorage. The trooper gave me 10 days to pay the fine (citation has # of days to respond). We were supposed to be on the cruise for the next 12 days, but he wouldn't listen. Very rude person.
